The great Indian poet -Kalidasa

Hello....! Readers...

I'm Vala Vrushaliba. I am come from Talaja. I am studying in semester 3 in Government Arts College there.

My major subject is English. We have a paper is SEC(skill enhancement course). It is taken by Hinaba Sarvaiya. In the first unit of this paper there is a question of blog writing. So,ma'am has given us the task of writing a blog on any topic in your own way.

So, I thought of writing a blog on the seven works of the great Indian poet Kalidasa. Before the works of kalidasa, I feel it is necessary to write about him.

“Kalidasa is the Shakespeare of India.”
-William Jones

Kalidasa's time:

Kalidasa was one of the greatest Sanskrit poets and playwrights of ancient India. His exact time period is uncertain but he is generally believed to have lived either in the 1st or 2nd century BCE or according to some scholars in the 4th to 5th century CE. It is widely believed that Kalidas was one of the nine gems in the court of king Vikramaditya.

Kalidasa's name history:

The name Kalidasa means "servant of Kali," referring to the Hindu goddess Kali. It is believed that Kalidasa was a devout follower of the goddess, and his name reflects his deep devotion to her. According to legends, he was once an uneducated man, but through the blessings of Goddess Kali, he gained immense wisdom and poetic talent. Some stories suggest his real name is unknown and "Kalidasa" became his identity after divine enlightenment. Though the historical truth is uncertain, these tales highlight the cultural reverence for his poetic genius.

Kalidasa's popular 7 works:

Here, are the seven famous works of Kalidasa along with their literary forms:

  •  Abhijnanashakuntalam -Drama(play)
  • Malavikagnimitram        -Drama(play)
  • Vikramorvasiyam           - Drama(play)
  • Raghuvansham                - Mahakavya
  • Kumarasambhavam       - Mahakavya
  • Meghadutam                    - Lyric poem
  •  Ritusamharam                - Lyric poem

Now, let us briefly understand the works of Kalidasa.

Abhijnanashakuntalam:

It is a Sanskrit play written by Kalidasa. It tells the love story of King Dushyanta and Shakuntala. Due to a sage’s curse, the king forgets her. He remembers her after finding a lost ring. Later, they reunite and live happily. The play is known for its beauty, emotion, and poetic style.

Malavikagnimitram:

It is the first play written by Kalidasa. It tells the love story of King Agnimitra and a beautiful maid, Malavika. The king falls in love with her, not knowing she is a princess in disguise. After many twists, her royal identity is revealed. They finally get married. The play is light, romantic, and full of courtly humor.

Vikramorvasiyam:

It is a Sanskrit play by Kalidasa. It tells the love story of King Pururavas and the heavenly nymph Urvashi. They face many challenges due to divine laws and separation. Urvashi is cursed and sent to earth, where she unites with the king. After trials, they are finally allowed to stay together. The play blends romance, mythology, and poetic beauty.

Raghuvansham:

It is an epic poem written by Kalidasa in Sanskrit. It describes the royal dynasty of Raghu, to which Lord Rama belonged. The poem highlights the bravery, virtues, and sacrifices of Raghu kings. Kalidasa's rich language and vivid imagery make it a literary masterpiece. It consists of 19 cantos (sargas). The work glorifies ideal kingship and dharma.

Kumarasambhavam:

It is a famous epic poem by Kalidasa in Sanskrit. It narrates the birth of Lord Kartikeya (Kumara), the son of Shiva and Parvati. The poem beautifully describes Parvati’s penance and love for Shiva. It also portrays the cosmic purpose of their union—to defeat the demon Tarakasura. Kalidasa’s imagery and poetic style are rich and graceful. The work reflects themes of love, devotion, and divine purpose.

Meghadutam:

Meghadutam is a lyrical poem written by Kalidasa in Sanskrit. It tells the story of a Yaksha (celestial being) who is exiled and sends a message to his wife through a passing cloud. The poem is famous for its rich descriptions of nature, landscapes, and emotions. It is divided into two parts—Purva megha and Uttara megha. Kalidasa beautifully blends love, longing, and natural beauty. Meghadutam is considered a classic of Sanskrit poetry.

Ritusamharam:

Ritusamharam is a beautiful lyrical poem written by Kalidasa. It describes the six Indian seasons—spring, summer, monsoon, autumn, pre-winter, and winter. Each season is portrayed with vivid imagery and emotional expression. The poem captures nature’s beauty and its effect on human feelings, especially love. Kalidasa’s rich language makes the poem deeply sensuous and poetic. It reflects the harmony between nature and human life.

Here,I have shared a video about Kalidasa's works. I hope it will help you understand his creations better.
